My shop is a 3 car garage workshop measuring 33' x 22' nestled in North Richland Hills, TX. I'm 58 and started woodworking in 2019. I'm living proof that it's never too late to try something new!
How did I get started? Much credit goes to the Hallmark "Mystery" Christmas in July that my wife watches all the time. That show drove me crazy! So I decided to give woodworking a try. I contacted a longtime friend, Tony Ewing, owner of Advance Fixtures in Farmersville Texas, and he recommended getting Dewalt tools to start out with. He is very successful so that was good enough for me. So I had a BUNCH of yellow large boxes mailed to me from Dewalt:
-
jobsite table saw
-
miter saw
-
trim router
-
planer
-
jigsaw
-
clamps
Then I took a table saw safety course at my local woodworking store and watched a LOT of YouTube channels. In fact I am working on my masters degree from YouTube University!
Matt "The Mailman" Rabe delivered my order and he said, "Your first build needs to be a crosscut sled."
"Great idea, thanks!"
I had NO CLUE what a crosscut sled was but I found one on King's Fine Woodworking's channel and built one. It was used on just about every build. Soon afterwards my son bought me a Ridgid oscillating sander for Father's Day. So I needed to combine the planer and sander on 1 cart. Once again King's Fine Woodworking to the rescue with a flip cart video, as space was becoming an issue.
There are TWO things that affect EVERY woodworker: space and budget.
I started out in a 2 car garage. We later moved from a 2 story 2 car garage to a single story 3 car garage. I purchased a 3 horsepower Sawstop table saw, a Laguna HEPA dust extractor and 14BX bandsaw. I started following 731Woodworks in August of 2020 and built many projects from their channel. As a token of my appreciation, I sent them a Wahuda jointer and Festool sander/vac. Many helped me along the way, just paying it forward.
I am very appreciative of Highland Woodworking allowing me the opportunity to share my shop and my story.
