Here's My Woodworking!
By John Moore
Wimberley, TX

One of my most recent projects was a desktop made from large mesquite boards for my wife. The woodworking was not the key for this project, it was the wood.

One of the slabs (28” x 9.5') had the most interesting combination of figures I've seen on one board… quilt, flame, eye burl (as I think it's called) and many other “flaws”. It also had some marks left by a planer or other tool, which I left, as it looked like tall grass in a field...

The desktop needed to be wider than the individual boards, so i added an epoxy “river” to join two board lengths to the desired width…but the woodworking is not the thing, it's the figure on the one board that is magnificent. I can only imagine that this large mesquite tree underwent some remarkable stresses during its long life..

Hard to get the whole thing in one photo, so below are some smaller views:

I've always loved trees and wood, and I got started in woodworking to make guitars for my other main interest/hobby, music. After retirement, I started making guitars for various non-profits, for their fundraising efforts (auctions or raffles). Sometimes this is a "cigar box" style guitar, i.e. quickly made from reclaimed boxes/wood etc, and sometimes it is a more elaborate "real" electric guitar.

For the "box" guitars, I've used a fishing net, a pizza peel, an album cover, a cookie tin and much more as the basis for the guitar. For the fancier guitars, I typically use nice wood, and they also have a theme depending on the non-profit (cancer ribbon for a cancer charity, river for a naturalist event, etc).

I've dabbled in furniture and turning, but mainly focus on guitars.
