As a small family business trying to compete nationwide with competitors many times our size, we feel it is important to give 24/7 Free Shipping a try.

Celebrating President Jimmy Carter’s
99th Birthday,
October 1, 2023
For many years we have been honored to serve as a source of woodworking tools for President Jimmy Carter.
His first visit to our store came in March, 1981 soon after he had moved back to Plains, Georgia.
His cabinet had gifted him a new workshop with every Craftsman tool any woodworker would ever need.
On an early visit, he told me if we could arrange for Tage Frid to come to Atlanta to teach a woodworking class, he would make it a point to attend.
He did indeed participate throughout Tage Frid’s first weekend seminar at Highland Hardware in 1983.
Over the years he went on buy a number of hand tools from us,
including the Record Jointer Plane he’s seen using here.

A Brief Summary of How
Highland Woodworking
First Came into Being

In 1973 I had a chance encounter with an old high school friend. As the recent new president of
King Hardware Company, Ben Dyer offered me a job on the spot to work part time at one of their seven
stores. After about 2 months, the manager of that store quit & I became the manager.
Around this time I reconnected with Sharon McEnearney, a former girlfriend whom I’d met at
Georgia Tech. We got married in the spring of 1974 & then went to work together managing a different King Hardware store.
This one happened to be a dealer for Shopsmith, & over time we were able to significantly grow Shopsmith sales.
Exceptional new employees soon joined us, & we also found a good source for hardwood lumber.
Before we knew it, a small woodworking community had developed around this little King Hardware store.
Eventually at King Hardware we published 3 issues of a newsletter called Wood News to help
promote woodworking. However in the spring of 1978, Sharon and I decided to resign from King
and take off on our own to open Highland Hardware. We began as a small hardware store with
woodworking tools as our unique specialty.
As we attracted more great employees, more newsletters were published & woodworking classes
were offered. After finding sources for fine tools to sell & becoming a Makita dealer, we published
our first homemade catalog in 1981.
As our original 6-year lease was expiring, we renovated an old building across the street & moved
into our present location.
That is the short version of how all this got started, thanks to a chance encounter with an old friend.
