I started carving at around 11 years old. I would carve every piece of wood I could find. At 18 I attended Pratt Institute in NYC, graduating with a Bachelors in Industrial Design.
I retired in 2007 and moved to Florida. I am now able to sculpt every day. Most days I start carving around 10am and continue until 4:30pm.
I teach whittling as part of the Adult Continuing Education at the local college extension. Not only it is rewarding, it is a whole lot of fun. Through the school, I have been able to show my work in several local galleries. I have been lucky enough to have sold a number of pieces.
Because my right hand has developed arthritis, I now have some difficulty carving with knives and chisels. Most of my recent work has been done with power carvers. It took me a few years to perfect my skills but I am now extremely comfortable using power grinders. I don't plan on stopping the creative process any time soon, I'm having too much fun.
