I started whittling and carving in 1947 at the age of 12. There is very little work left from that period. I am completely self taught. I have helped people with their efforts to get started, never for a fee only as a friendly service.
During my professional training and career I was not able to get around to carving, only sporadically. I got back into it in
the early 90's. I have carved shallow and deep relief, functional objects like spoons and bowls, and figurines of
animals and humans. I have carved a variety of commissions using all types of wood species that looked suitable. Sometimes I used bone and
other materials whenever the work called for it. By overcoming the particular difficuties each species of wood
and other materials present, you learn to work with the material rather than forcing it to do what you want.
I have been published in
Creative Wood
, the New Zealand woodworking magazine, and am about to be printed in a
little booklet to help beginning carvers learn how to carve. Being somewhat older than I used to be, I'm not
spending as many hours at the workbench, but I have no intention of stopping anytime soon.
There are no captions with my work; I do not want anyone to be restricted in how they see the image, except for the spoon above, which has a specific function as a spoon, and the portrait below, which limits your imagination. I have given views of most of my work from two sides to better understand the spatial arrangement of each piece.
