Report on Woodworking Basics Class
On a recent weekend at Highland Woodworking,Char Miller-King taught her Woodworking Basics class. In this class, students can learn the foundations of woodworking while making a beautiful cutting board that they can take home afterwards. Students learn how to prepare rough cut lumber from the sawmill and transform it into smooth dimensional wood using both a power joiner and planer. Then they learn how to safely cut strips using our classroom's Sawstop table saw and Rikon 10-326 bandsaw.
Once all the wood has been cut into dimensional strips, now the creativity begins. Students cut up strips of Cherry, Walnut and Maple, which all have distinct colors. They design their favorite pattern and then the strips are glued and clamped together for an overnight curing process.
On the second day, students come in and chisel off the glue and sand their cutting boards to an attractive final look. The cutting board is a great stepping stone to taking on larger projects, but the fundamentals are important to learn and this is a great project for a beginner who's curious about the craft of woodworking.
